Deaf Awareness & Fun with SgSL Signs

Established in 1955, the Singapore Association for the Deaf (SADeaf) is a social service organisation that serves more than 5,300 Deaf and Hard-of-hearing persons in Singapore, providing a gamut of services such as sign language interpretation, note-taking, Deaf awareness workshops, employment support, counselling, financial assistance, sports and recreational activities.

Welcome to the wonderful world of sign language where you will use your hands, body and facial expressions to communicate. People use spoken and written languages to relay ideas, feelings, sentiments, share history and culture. Deaf people use sign language to express similarly.

Sign language is a general term which refers to a group of languages that are manually produced and visually understood. Sign language is natural to deaf persons who do not orientate their lives to the world of sound. It is not universal though – each nation, state or community with deaf persons will develop its unique sign language.

Join us in our Deaf Awareness workshop and Basic Singapore Sign Language class to gain knowledge in Deaf culture and basic interaction skills with our instructors!

You will:

  •  Gain insight into the inner workings of Deaf people and the Deaf community and the diverse people within it
  •  Gain confidence and knowledge about Deaf issues and support services available
  •  Build understanding that promotes positive communication and experiences
  •  Deepen your understanding of how access for Deaf people can be improved
